2019 Junior and Senior Showcase Guidelines
Our inaugural Junior and Senior Showcase will take place on Friday, February 1, beginning at 8:30pm, after the Ensemble Musical Theatre Competition in the main performance space at Carmel Christian School.
There is no additional charge to participate in the Showcase for students who are registered for the Festival. Students who are not part of the Festival may participate in the Showcase for a $20 fee, which includes admission to the Christian College Theatre Panel Discussion on Friday at 2:30pm and the Ensemble Musical Theatre Competition at 6:30pm.
Space in the Showcase is limited, so advance sign up online is recommended. However, students may sign up at the Festival registration desk, while spots are available, until the announced deadline.
Preparing for Acting/Singing:
- You have 2 ½ minutes to perform, after 30 seconds to set up and introduce yourself. Prepare well, including timing your complete presentation. The material you use in the Showcase may be the same material you are using in the Festival competition, but it doesn’t have to be. You will be cut off if you go over time.
- Only monologues and solo singing may be performed in the Showcase. We suggest performing two contrasting monologues – for instance, comic and serious, contemporary and classical, etc. This is a standard request in auditions to show the range of your abilities. The most important factor, though, is that your monologues are well-prepared and suited for you.
- If you choose to sing, your song should make up no more than 1/3 of your time, so that you can also show your acting ability. You must use our accompanist, to help move the event along and make it more like a professional audition. Bring a well-marked copy of your accompaniment sheet music with you onstage, and use a portion of your 30 seconds of setup to talk with him about tempo and answer any questions he might have.
- No props or costumes are allowed. One chair will be provided.
- In your 30 seconds before beginning, you should set the chair (if you’re using it), talk briefly with the accompanist, then introduce yourself and your pieces. The timer for your 2 1/2 minutes will start when you begin performing, or at 30 seconds, whichever comes first.
- Your introduction should go something like: “Hello, my name is _______ from [school/group and city], and I’ll be performing monologues from [character name] in [play name] and [character name] in [play name]. My song is [title] from [musical name].” That’s all. Do not give any additional information about the play, scene, or character. The college representatives and audience are less interested in the context of the play than they are in how you bring it to life. Your acting is what will make it make sense.
- When you perform, place the imaginary person you’re talking to at a spot just above the audience’s heads so that they can see your face. Don’t look directly at the audience, and don’t look at a spot onstage where the listeners can’t see your face.
Preparing for Design Presentations
- Participants will set up their displays in a designated area of the performance space before the Showcase. Choose the drawings, models, photographs, and examples of your work that show your best skill and range in costumes, lighting, sets, properties, stage management or any combination of these.
- Prepare a presentation of your work not exceeding 3 minutes. You may cover anything you like, but we suggest that you use the time to talk about your approach on a particular production or two.
Creating your resume
If you’re interested in being considered for admission and scholarships for Christian college theatre programs, consider creating a resume and bringing 15 copies. Many great examples are available online, and you should ask your teachers for guidance.
Your resume should contain:
- Your name, city, and state (do not include street address); and your parent’s name, email address, and phone number.
- A high-quality photo that is a good likeness of you, to help the representatives remember who you are.
- Your school affiliation, grade point average, and grade in school.
- Theatre experience in your school, church, or community. Include the name of the play, your role in it, the month and year, and the producing organization. Do not include class projects of scenes from plays or one-acts unless you have little other theatre experience, and be sure that it’s clear on your resume that it was a class project and not a full production.
- Include classes, clubs, or school activities pertinent to theatre, music, dance, design, and other arts interests.
- Include other special skills, interests, awards, etc. These should be one-line bullet points – don’t go into more detail than necessary.
Interviewing with college representatives
College representatives will contact you by email or in person if they wish to schedule an individual interview on the Saturday of the Festival or at another time. Parents usually should not plan to attend interviews.
All individual interviews are held in public areas.
College reps might be interested in seeing an additional monologue or more photos from or information about shows you’ve designed or stage managed, if you have them prepared.
