Read on to learn more about the most recent Happening.

When: Friday morning through Sunday matinee performance, July 20-22, 2018

Where: Houston, TX, hosted by A. D. Players at the new Jeannette & L. M. George Theater

The Happening is an intimate gathering of theatre writers, directors, actors, producers, designers, teachers, students, and others who want to start a revolution of impact – through theatre, for God’s kingdom.

We’ve drawn the name of our gathering from unique performance events of the 1950s-70s. “Happenings” could take many forms, but they were participatory, experimental, experiential – and influential.

At CITA, we’re ready for a revolution in how Christians engage the world through theatre. Are you?

You’ll choose one of three tracks:

  • Creating New Works of Theatre – For writers, directors and producers creating authentic stories of Humanity. Led by Broadway, off-Broadway, and West End producer Bruce Long.
  • Engaging Communities through Applied Theatre – For artists utilizing theatre to meet the needs of their neighbors. Led by Dale Savidge, Ph.D., Registered Drama Therapist, Executive Director of Applied Theatre Center and CITA; in collaboration with Rich Swingle, actor and sociodrama specialist, and Phil Armour, licensed therapist who uses applied theatre techniques.
  • Cultivating the Next Generation of Theatre Artists – For educators and others nurturing Kingdom-minded theatre artists. Co-led by Michelle Long, Director of Education at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, and Luann Purcell Jennings, arts entrepreneurship educator and pastor/mentor to emerging artists.

Learn more about the track leaders and about the specific topics to be covered.

Several sessions will gather all participants for an evening keynote event with David Taylor, play readings, and a performance of A. D. Players’ production of God’s Favorite by Neil Simon (included in your registration fee) at 2pm on Sunday, July 22. You’ll have plenty of time for networking and sharing ideas during those sessions and over meals.

A.D. Players was founded in 1967 by Jeannette Clift-George, one of the pioneers of theatre with a Christian perspective. Jeannette passed into her Father’s presence last December but her influence will always be remembered in the new theatre complex bearing her name, where The Happening will take place. Come and learn more about the amazing impact A. D. Players has had in its community and beyond!

Conference rates are available at our preferred hotel, Doubletree by Hilton by the Galleria. Reservations must be made by June 22 for the conference rate.
